3D soil void space lacunarity as an index of degradation after land use change Agronomy
Santos, Carlos Renato dos; Antonino, Antônio Celso Dantas; Heck, Richard John; Lucena, Leandro Ricardo Rodrigues de; Oliveira, Alex Cristóvão Holanda de; Silva, Antonio Samuel Alves da; Stosic, Borko; Menezes, Romulo Simões Cezar.
In this work, lacunarity analysis is performed on soil pores segmented by the pure voxel extraction method from soil tomography images. The conversion of forest to sugarcane plantation was found to result in higher sugarcane soil pore lacunarity than that of native forest soil, while the porosity was found to be lower. More precisely, this study shows that native forest has more porous soil with a more uniform spatial distribution of pores, while sugarcane soil has lower porosity and a more heterogeneous pore distribution. Moreover, validation through multivariate statistics demonstrates that lacunarity can be considered a relevant index of clustering and can explain the variability among soils under different land use systems. While porosity by itself...

Gamma-ray computed tomography to evaluate changes in the structure of a clayey soil due to agricultural traffic - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.4727 Agronomy
Pires, Luiz Fernando; Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa.
A first generation gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) equipped with a 137Cs source was used to investigate changes in soil structure due to agricultural machinery traffic. Core samples with volume of 55 cm3 were collected at the surface (0-10 cm) of a Brazilian clayey soil. Significant alterations in soil structure occurred after two passages of tractor wheels, with important decreases in soil porosity. CT data allowed a continuous analysis of soil bulk density and also soil porosity distribution for 1.25 and 1.20 mm layers, which cannot be provided by traditional methods commonly used in soil physics.

Islabão,Gláucia Oliveira; Lima,Cláudia Liane Rodrigues de; Vahl,Ledemar Carlos; Timm,Luis Carlos; Teixeira,Juliana Brito da Silva.
ABSTRACT The combustion of rice husk generates a partially burnt mixture called rice husk ash (RHA) that can be used as a source of nutrients to crops and as a conditioner of soil physical properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of RHA levels on the hydro-physical properties of a Typic Hapludult. The experimental design was composed of random blocks with four replications, which comprised plots of 24 m2 and treatments with increasing RHA rates: 0, 40, 80 and 120 Mg ha-1. Undisturbed soil samples were collected in the soil layers of 0.00-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m after nine months of RHA application, using steel cylinders (0.03 m of height and 0.047 m of diameter). These samples were used to determine soil bulk density (Bd), total soil...

Influence of physical attributes and pedotransfer function for predicting water retention in management systems AGRIAMBI
Auler,André C.; Pires,Luiz F.; Pineda,Maria C..
ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of the soil structural physical attributes on the water retention and to develop pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for the estimation of the soil water content (θ) at different matric potentials of a Dystrophic Red Latosol (Hapludox) under conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) soil management systems. The effects of long-term CT and NT (over 25 years) management on the soil bulk density (BD), total porosity (TP), macroporosity (Ma), microporosity (Mi) and water retention were investigated. The PTFs were developed to predict θ and used to evaluate the soil water retention curve only for the NT system. The NT system was characterized by smaller values of the soil BD and higher values of the...

Irrigation with domestic wastewater: a multivariate analysis of main soil changes Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Gloaguen,Thomas Vincent; Gonçalves,Roberta Alessandra Bruschi; Forti,Maria Cristina; Lucas,Yves; Montes,Célia Regina.
Irrigation with treated domestic sewage wastewater (TSE) is an agricultural practice to reduce water requirements of agroecossystems and the nutrient load impact on freshwaters, but adverse effects on soil chemical (salinization, sodification, etc.) and soil physical properties (alteration in soil porosity and hydraulic conductivity, etc.) have been reported. This study aimed to define some relationships among these changes in an Oxisol using multivariate analysis. Corn (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were grown for two years, irrigated with TSE. The following soil properties were determined: Ca2+; Mg2+; Na+; K+ and H + Al contents, cationic exchangeable capacity (CEC), sum of bases (SB), base saturation (V), texture (sand, silt and...

Nanoparticles and nanostructure morphology of a Red Latosol in rehabilitation AGRIAMBI
Souto Filho,Sebastião N.; Alves,Marlene C.; Monreal,Carlos M.; Bonini,Carolina dos S. B..
ABSTRACT In the process of rehabilitation of a soil, two points are fundamental: to define optimal interferences to accelerate the rehabilitation process and the most appropriate indicators to diagnose its quality. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the nanoparticle and nanostructure morphology of a Red Latosol in rehabilitation for eight years. The soil under rehabilitation process was compared with its natural state and degraded. In the topsoil, nanoparticles (ø < 100 nm) and fine clay (ø < 200 nm) were quantified and the nanostructures morphology was studied using images obtained by transmission electron microscopy. Soil porosity, bulk density and carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen contents were analyzed. It was found that the nanoparticles and...

Physical Properties of Soil Structures Identified by the Profil Cultural under Two Soil Management Systems Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Macedo,Sônia de Fátima Schilickmann; Grimaldi,Michel; Medina,Cristiane Conti; Cunha,José Edézio da; Guimarães,Maria de Fátima; Tavares Filho,João.
ABSTRACT Soil structure plays an important role in water retention, infiltration capacity, porosity, and penetration resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and physical properties of Oxisol soils (bulk density and macro-, micro-, and total porosity) in the structures identified using the profil cultural method in areas under two different management practices (perennial pasture and sugarcane). Three pits were dug in each plot to find out how homogeneous morphological structural units (HMSU) were organized in the soil. Next, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (Ki) was measured in situ inside each HMSU using a triple-ring infiltrometer at multiple suction. Six samples were collected (two samples for each kind...

SANTOS,DIEGO DOS; SOUZA,EDUARDO G. DE; NÓBREGA,LÚCIA H. P.; BAZZI,CLAUDIO L.; QUEIROZ,FERNANDO N. DE.
Cover crops are important for improving soil quality. However, soil properties usually have some spatial dependence. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of winter cover crops on physical properties of soil and soybean yields using thematic maps. Five winter treatments were used: black oats; intercropping 1 (forage turnips and black oats); intercropping 2 (forage turnips, black oats and common vetch); wheat; and control. Macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, bulk density and water content of the soil from 0 - 0.1 m depths were evaluated after the winter cover crop management. Soybeans were sown over the entire area in the summer after the winter cover crop management, and the soybean yield was determined for each treatment. Maps for each...

Pore size distribution in soils irrigated with sodic water and wastewater Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Gonçalves,Roberta Alessandra Bruschi; Gloaguen,Thomas Vincent; Folegatti,Marcos Vinicius; Libardi,Paulo Leonel; Lucas,Yves; Montes,Célia Regina.
Soil porosity, especially pore size distribution, is an important controlling factor for soil infiltration, hydraulic conductivity, and water retention. This study aimed to verify the effect of secondary-treated domestic wastewater (STW) on the porosity of a sandy loam Oxisol in the city of Lins, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The two-year experiment was divided into three plots: soil cultivated with corn and sunflower and irrigated with STW, soil cultivated and irrigated with sodic groundwater, and non-irrigated and non-cultivated soil (control). At the end of the experiment, undisturbed core samples were sampled from 0 to 2.0 m (8 depths). The water retention curves were obtained by tension plates and Richard's pressure plate apparatus, and the pore size...

Pore system changes of damaged Brazilian oxisols and nitosols induced by wet-dry cycles as seen in 2-D micromorphologic image analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pires,Luiz F.; Reichardt,Klaus; Cooper,Miguel; Cássaro,Fabio A.M.; Dias,Nivea M.P.; Bacchi,Osny O.S..
Soil pore structure characterization using 2-D image analysis constitutes a simple method to obtain essential information related to soil porosity and pore size distribution (PSD). Such information is important to infer on soil quality, which is related to soil structure and transport processes inside the soil. Most of the time soils are submitted to wetting and drying cycles (W-D), which can cause important changes in soils with damaged structures. This report uses 2-D image analysis to evaluate possible modifications induced by W-D cycles on the structure of damaged soil samples. Samples of three tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, GF; Eutric Nitosol, EN; and Rhodic Ferralsol, RF) were submitted to three treatments: 0WD, the control treatment in which...

Soil CO2 emission of sugarcane fields as affected by topography Scientia Agricola
Brito,Liziane de Figueiredo; Marques Júnior,José; Pereira,Gener Tadeu; Souza,Zigomar Menezes; La Scala Júnior,Newton.
The spatial and temporal variation of soil CO2 emission is influenced by several soil attributes related to CO2 production and its diffusion in the soil. However, few studies aiming to understand the effect of topography on the variability of CO2 emissions exist, especially for cropping areas of tropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial and temporal changes of soil CO2 emission and its relation to soil attributes in an area currently cropped with sugarcane under different relief forms and slope positions. Mean CO2 emissions in the studied period (seven months) varied between 0.23 and 0.71, 0.27 and 0.90, and 0.31 and 0.80 g m-2 h-1 of CO2 for concave (Conc), backslope (BackS) and footslope (FootS) positions, respectively....

Soil pore distribution as affected by cattle trampling under no-till and reduced-till systems Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Iglesias,J.O; Galantini,J.A; Krüger,H; Venanzi,S.
Soil pore size affects soil air and water dynamics, and thus influence crop productivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of reduced-tillage (RT) and no-tillage (NT) systems on soil pore distribution under animal grazing. The soil was sampled at 0-5, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-20 cm depths before and after animal grazing. Bulk density, total porosity and the volume of three pore sizes (macropores, mesopores and micropores) were determined. Differences in total porosity between both tillage systems were statistically significant (P<0.01) in the top 10 cm layer before grazing. Lower total porosity in NT could be related to the effect of previous years’grazing. In RT, disk operations before planting the oat (Avena sativa) crop increased...
